Mount Everest, the highest peak in the Himalayas, is a global trekking and mountaineering destination. However, increasing tourism has led to severe environmental challenges, threatening its natural beauty and sustainability.Cleaning Everest is a major challenge due to the rising number of climbers and the waste accumulation they leave behind. Project CARE aims to remove 20,000 kg of waste from the Everest region in two phases, addressing discarded gear, trash, and human waste.
The Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee (SPCC), founded in 1991 by local Sherpa’s, plays a crucial role in waste management across the Khumbu Region, including Sagarmatha National Park and Everest. Since 1997, SPCC has implemented sustainable waste management strategies at Everest Base Camp and surrounding peaks.
Beyond just cleaning Everest, this initiative protects the environment, the ecosystem, and local communities, ensuring the long-term sustainability of this legendary destination.
As proud Nepali citizens, Everest is not just a mountain; it is a symbol of our national identity. The cleanup cost is NPR 500 per kg, totaling NPR 100 Lakhs (EUR 71,250) to complete this vital project.
